Coptic Orthodox Faith

The Coptic Orthodox Church is an ancient Christian Church that began in the first century through Saint Mark the Apostle. Its faith is rooted in the Holy Bible and the early Christian Tradition. It centers on the love of God for all humanity.

This page offers a gentle and simple overview of these beliefs, inviting all people to learn, reflect, and ask questions in an atmosphere of respect and openness.

1. God – The Creator of All

We believe in one God, the Creator of heaven and earth.
God is eternal, all-loving, and the source of life. He created humanity out of love and desires a relationship with every person.

2. God Is Love and Wants to Be Known

God did not remain distant from humanity.
From the beginning, He revealed Himself through creation, conscience, and the prophets, guiding humanity toward truth, goodness, and life.

3. Jesus Christ – God Revealed in the Flesh

We believe that Jesus Christ is God Himself, who became truly human without ceasing to be God.
This is called the Incarnation—God taking flesh out of love for humanity.

“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” (John 1:14)

4. The Incarnation – God Came Close to Us

Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit.
He lived a real human life, experiencing joy, suffering, hunger, and sorrow—so that He could fully share in our humanity and restore it.

5. The Life and Teachings of Jesus Christ

Jesus taught about love, forgiveness, humility, and the Kingdom of God.
He revealed God as a loving Father and showed us how to live in love toward God and one another.

6. The Cross – Salvation Through Love

We believe that Jesus Christ was crucified voluntarily.
Through His death on the Cross, He defeated sin and death, offering salvation and new life to all humanity.

7. The Resurrection – Victory Over Death

On the third day, Jesus Christ rose from the dead.
The Resurrection is the heart of the Christian faith—it proclaims hope, renewal, and eternal life.

8. The Holy Trinity – One God in Three Persons

We believe in One God in Three Persons:

  • The Father

  • The Son (Jesus Christ)

  • The Holy Spirit

This is a mystery of love and unity, not three gods, but one divine essence.

9. The Church – A Living Community of Faith

The Church is not just a building.
It is the community of believers united in faith, worship, and love, continuing the mission of Christ in the world.

The Coptic Orthodox Church traces its roots back to Saint Mark the Apostle in the first century.

10. The Sacraments – God’s Grace at Work

The Church believes in 7 holy sacraments:

Baptism, Chrismation (Confirmation / Anointing with Holy Oil), Eucharist (Holy Communion), Repentance & Confession, Matrimony (Marriage), Unction of the Sick (Holy Oil / Anointing of the Sick), Priesthood (Ordination / Holy Orders)

Through them, believers experience God’s grace and spiritual life.

11. The Bible – God’s Word

We believe the Holy Bible is inspired by God.
It reveals God’s plan of salvation and guides believers in faith and daily life.

12. The Second Coming of Jesus Christ

We believe that Jesus Christ will come again in glory.
He will judge the world with justice and mercy, and His Kingdom will be fully revealed.

13. The End of Days – Eternal Life

At the end of time:

  • The dead will be raised

  • God’s justice and love will be fully revealed

  • Those who love God will live eternally with Him

This is not a message of fear, but hope.

14. An Open Invitation

The Coptic Orthodox Church welcomes all people to learn, to ask questions, and to encounter the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ.

1. The Holy Trinity

The Coptic Church believes in One God in Three Hypostases (Persons): the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
They are one in essence, equal in divinity, without division or separation.
The Father is the source, the Son is the Logos, and the Holy Spirit is the Life-Giver.
Their unity is perfect, and their work in creation and salvation is inseparable.

2. The Incarnation of the Logos

The eternal Son, the Logos, took a real human nature from St. Mary. The Word became flesh.
He became fully God and fully Man without confusion, without change, without division.
The Incarnation was necessary for the restoration of humanity, defeating death, and renewing the divine image in us.
Christ is one incarnate nature of God the Word (Miaphysis).

3. The Atonement and Salvation

Salvation in the Coptic faith is not only the forgiveness of sins, but also healing, renewal, and victory over death.
Christ died willingly on the cross to abolish corruption and reconcile humanity with God.
His resurrection grants new life; His blood cleanses; His humanity became the source of life for us.

4. The Resurrection of Christ

Christ rose bodily from the dead, conquering death for all humanity.
His resurrection is real, historical, and eternal.
It is the guarantee of our own resurrection and the foundation of Christian hope.
Through His resurrection, He restored human nature to incorruption.

5. The Sacraments

The Coptic Orthodox Church recognizes Seven Sacraments (Holy Mysteries) instituted by Christ.
They are channels of divine grace and real encounters with God.
The sacraments unite us with Christ and with the Church.
Each sacrament is performed through the Holy Spirit in the apostolic tradition.

Go to the Seven Sacraments

6. The Holy Scriptures and Holy Tradition

Scripture is the inspired Word of God.
Holy Tradition is the living transmission of the faith through the Apostles, Fathers, liturgy, and councils.
The Coptic Church holds that Scripture and Tradition form one unified source of revelation.
Interpretation is guided by the early Church Fathers.

7. The Church as the Body of Christ

The Church is the mystical body of Christ and the ark of salvation.
It is both divine and human—founded by Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit.
Its unity is preserved through apostolic succession, the sacraments, and the liturgical life.
Membership in the Church means living in communion with Christ and the saints.

8. The Intercession of Saints

The saints are alive with Christ and participate in His glory.
Their prayers support the Church, just as members pray for one another.
Intercession does not replace Christ’s mediatorship; it is a sign of the unity of the Body.
We honor, not worship, the saints.

9. The Veneration of St. Mary (Theotokos)

Mary is honored as Theotokos (Mother of God) because she bore the incarnate Logos.
She is the highest among saints, full of grace, and an example of obedience and purity.
Her role in salvation history is unique and essential.
The Church asks for her intercession, not worship.

10. The Apostolic Priesthood

The priesthood continues the ministry of Christ through the Apostles.
It is transmitted via apostolic succession through the laying on of hands.
Through the priesthood, the sacraments are administered, and the Church is shepherded.
The priest acts as a steward of God’s mysteries, not a lord over the people.

11. The Second Coming and Resurrection of the Dead

Christ will return in glory to judge the living and the dead.
All humans will rise with a transformed, incorruptible body.
The righteous enter eternal life; those who reject God face separation from Him.
The Church lives in expectation of Christ’s return.

12. The Life of Repentance and Spiritual Growth

Repentance is the daily renewal of the heart and mind.
The Coptic Church teaches synergy: God works, and the human cooperates.
Through prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and sacraments, the believer grows into Christ’s likeness.
Holiness is a lifelong journey empowered by the Holy Spirit.

The Seven Sacraments

1. Baptism

Baptism is the first sacrament, where the believer is cleansed from all sins, reborn spiritually, and incorporated into the Body of Christ. It symbolizes death to sin and new life in God, initiating the believer into the Church.

2. Chrismation (Confirmation / Anointing with Holy Oil)

Immediately following baptism, the believer receives the gift of the Holy Spirit through the anointing with holy oil (chrism). This sacrament empowers the Christian for spiritual growth, sanctification, and active participation in the life of God.

3. Eucharist (Holy Communion)

In the Eucharist, believers partake of the true Body and Blood of Christ under the forms of bread and wine. It unites the faithful with Christ, strengthens spiritual life, and nourishes the soul with divine grace.

4. Repentance & Confession

Through repentance and confession, believers admit their sins before God in the presence of the Priest receive forgiveness, and are spiritually restored. This sacrament brings reconciliation with God and the Church, healing the soul and strengthening faith.

5. Matrimony (Marriage)

Marriage is a sacred union blessed by God, symbolizing the union of Christ and His Church. It sanctifies the couple, guides them in mutual love, and provides a foundation for family life according to God’s will.

6. Unction of the Sick (Holy Oil / Anointing of the Sick)

Through this sacrament, the believer receives physical, emotional, and spiritual healing by God’s grace. Anointing with holy oil invokes the Holy Spirit to comfort, strengthen, and, if God wills, restore health.

7. Priesthood (Ordination / Holy Orders)

Ordination confers the grace and authority to serve God and His Church. Those ordained as deacons, priests, or bishops are empowered to teach, administer the sacraments, and shepherd the faithful in spiritual matters.

The Orthodox Creed

We believe in one God, God the Father, the Almighty, Who created heaven and earth, and all things, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-Begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten not created, of one essence with the Father, by Whom all things were made; Who for us, men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnated of the Holy Spirit and of the Virgin Mary, and became man. And He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, suffered and was buried. And on the third day He rose from the dead, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into the heavens; and sat at the right hand of His Father, and also He is coming again in His glory to judge the living and the dead, whose kingdom has no end.

Yes, we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Life-Giver, Who proceeds from the Father, Who, with the Father and the Son, is worshipped and glorified, Who spoke in the prophets. And in one holy, catholic and apostolic church. We confess one baptism for the remission of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the coming age. Amen.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don’t look even slightly believable.
